The Whitworth Art Gallery which is part of the University of Manchester in northwest England, is home to an impressive range of watercolours, prints, drawings, modern art and sculpture, as well as the largest collections of textiles and wallpapers outside London.
The Whitworth uses its collections to create changing exhibitions exploring different themes, as well as hosting a programme of innovative touring exhibitions. Curators regularly change the artworks on display in the galleries and provide access to reserve collections, especially for study purposes. A selection of tours, lectures, practical workshops and concerts accompanies the exhibition programme.
It also houses one of the largest collections of Pre-Raphaelite paintings in the world, with paintings by Hunt, Rossetti, Madox Brown, Burne-Jones, Arthur Hughes and others. The Decorative Arts Collections include some 12,000 artefacts from various periods and cultures including ceramics, glass and furniture. There is an on-site café and shop. Free 30 minute guided tours every Saturday and Sunday at 2.30pm. (Please check before setting off as times may have changed).
The Whitworth seeks to promote understanding of the cultural and historic significance of its collections through their imaginative use and interpretation. The Education service organises a full programme of activities for formal and informal learning.
Opening: Tuesday-Sunday 10.00am-5.00pm. Closed Mondays except Bank Holidays. Also closed 1 January, Good Friday, 24-26 and 31 December. (Times may have changed - please check before setting off).
