The People's History Museum explores the world changing events led by the working people of Britain. It is the national centre for the collection, conservation, interpretation and study of material relating to the history of working people in Britain. The museum occupies two sites in Manchester city centre. All its public galleries, education services, shop and café are housed in the Pump House on Bridge Street, a unique museum dedicated to the 'extraordinary story of ordinary people', offering a new look at the lives of working people over the last 200 years.
BACKGROUND The museum derives its origin from the Trade Union, Labour and Co-operative History Society. From the 1960s the society formed a small collection and between 1975 and 1986 ran a museum in Limehouse Town Hall in London. The collections were then in storage until the Greater Manchester authorities made a funding offer. A new trust was created and the museum re-opened in 1990, initially on the Princess Street site.
COLLECTIONS The museum holds the largest collection of historic trade union and political banners in the world and is the UK's leading authority on the conservation and study of banners. There are nearly 400 banners in the collection including the world's oldest trade union banner, that of the Liverpool Tinplate Workers of 1821. The museum also houses the National Banner Survey, an inventory of historic banners in UK museums, completed in 1999.
THE PUMP HOUSE The main public areas, opened in May 1994, are based in the Pump House. This is situated in the city centre on the banks of the River Irwell, at the north east corner of the new Spinningfields development. The museum offers a unique look at the lives of ordinary working people over the last 200 years, from Victorian cotton workers to professional footballers
